1995 Annual Conference - Pittsburgh, PA
The ninth annual National Conference of Governors' Schools will explore school reform and the roles of Governors' Schools as a modern "Renaissance in Learning". A special preconference session on educational reform and technology, hosted by Duquesne University, will set the stage for the three-day conference. The days and evenings will be filled with outstanding speakers, sessions, discussions and entertainment, providing the opportunity for all participants to return to their home states with renewed vigor, stimulating ideas and reinforced commitment to serve the talented students of the Governors' Schools.
Who Should Attend?
The 1995 National Conference of Governors' Schools is designed for directors, faculty and sponsors of Governors' Schools; directors, faculty, alumni and sponsors of magnet and charter schools; directors, faculty and sponsors of programs for the gifted; all persons whose interest is in meeting the needs of the gifted and talented; and all educators who promote school reform and who are seeking model programs for all public schools.
Outcomes
The outcomes of the 1995 National Conference of Governors' Schools will touch not only those in attendance and, in turn, their students, but also will have an impact on national and state initiatives in school reform, as the Governors' Schools set the standard by which excellence is measured. These are:
Better understanding of the impact Governors' Schools have on educational reform and the impact educational reform has on the mission of Governors' Schools.
Renewal of commitment to the mission of Governors' Schools.
Return to respective states with a resolve to pursue the newest technology.
Discussion with colleagues on the implications of educational issues discussed at the Conference.
Fuller appreciation of the interconnectedness of the arts and technology.
Employment of new techniques in seeking and responsibly utilizing corporate funding and other development strategies.
Publication and dissemination of a professional summary, Proceedings and Reflections of the 1995 National Conference of Governors' Schools: A Renaissance in Learning.

Keynote Speakers
- The Honorable Tom Ridge - Governor of Pennsylvania
- David McCullough - David McCullough, biographer, historian, lecturer and teacher, is the author of six widely - acclaimed books, including most recently, Truman, one of the most popular American biographies of all time, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Among his numerous other honors, he is twice winner of the National Book Award, twice winner of the prestigious Francis Parkman Prize, and winner of an Emmy for his work in public television. To millions of television viewers David McCullough is perhaps best-known as the host of "The American Experience," and as narrator of Ken Burns, "The Civil War" and other PBS documentaries.
- Ronald Brandt - Ronald Brandt is the director of publications and executive editor of Educational Leadership (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), for which he has written more than 100 editorials and interviewed more than 50 leading educators. Dr. Brandt also has co-authored numerous publications on thinking skills, curriculum and staff development.
- Carolelinda Dickey - Carolelinda Dickey has been the executive director of the Pittsburgh Dance Council since July 1987. An alumna of the 1968 Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, Dickey is a strong presence in the arts and was the 1994 recipient of the Richard S. Caliguiri Memorial Award.
- Rob Fisher - Rob Fisher, a nationally known artist and presenter, is a member of the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University and is artistic director of the "living cell" project, a science education-based multi-media event for the Carnegie Science Center planetarium. He has received many private and public sculpture commissions, including one that will be featured in his presentation.
- Ivan Van Sertima - Ivan Van Sertima, literary critic, linguist, and anthropologist, is professor of Africana Studies at Rutgers University. An author and editor, his prize-winning They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America is in its twenty-first printing; he has defended this highly controversial thesis before the Smithsonian, which has recently published his address.
- Robert Williams - Robert Williams has worked nationally as a consultant for the past seven years with health care organizations, health professional schools and higher education, health professional organizations, and other organizations in leadership and management, strategic planning, public policy education, organizational development and managing change.
